Choosing the Right Childcare Setting

Updated: Mar 21

A Parent’s Guide to Finding the Perfect Setting

Choosing the right childcare setting is one of the most important decisions we make as parents. It’s about so much more than logistics—it’s about finding a space where your child feels safe, seen, and supported to grow. With so many options available, it can feel overwhelming. But with the right guidance, you can make a choice that works beautifully for your family.

Here’s my personal guide to choosing a setting that nurtures both you and your child.

The Environment Matters When Choosing the Right Childcare Setting

First impressions really do count. When you visit a setting, pause and take in the feel of the space. Is it warm, welcoming, and filled with children’s voices and laughter? Look for:

  • A mix of structured activities and child-led play

  • Access to outdoor space for fresh air and movement

  • Calm, uncluttered environments that feel safe but still playful

  • A natural, homely atmosphere rather than one that feels overly clinical

Children thrive outdoors, so settings that value nature and provide daily outdoor play get a big tick from me.

Relationships Are Everything

The adults in a childcare setting will play a big part in your child’s early experiences. Watch how they interact:

  • Do they kneel down and engage at eye-level?

  • Are they warm, responsive, and calm in their tone?

  • Do they comfort, encourage, and listen to the children?

Ask about staff qualifications and consistency—low turnover and small key person groups are ideal. Relationships are at the heart of every great setting.

Safety and Hygiene

It goes without saying, but always check:

  • How access is managed at drop-off and pick-up

  • Whether hygiene routines are embedded into the day (handwashing, food prep, nappy changing)

  • How they manage accidents and illnesses

Look for settings that are clean but not sterile, with clear policies that put children’s well-being first.

The Daily Rhythm

Every setting has its own rhythm. What matters is that it works for the children. Ask:

  • Is the routine consistent but flexible?

  • Do children have plenty of choice and autonomy?

  • How is learning supported—through play, exploration, and real-life experiences?

Look for environments where learning is meaningful, not just a checklist of outcomes.

Communication is Key

You should never feel in the dark about your child’s day. Good settings will:

  • Share regular updates through apps, photos, or chats at pickup

  • Be open to questions and feedback

  • Involve parents in celebrations, events, and daily life

You’re not just dropping your child off—you’re becoming part of a community.

Meals & Mealtimes

Food is fuel—but it’s also a learning experience. Check:

  • Are meals fresh, healthy, and inclusive of dietary needs?

  • Are children encouraged to feed themselves and try new things?

  • Are mealtimes calm and sociable?

Mealtimes are an important part of a child’s day and can reveal a lot about a setting’s approach.

Does It Fit Your Life?

The best childcare in the world still needs to work for your routine. Think about:

  • Opening hours and holiday closures

  • Fees and payment plans

  • Distance from home or work

  • Availability—some settings have waiting lists, so plan ahead!

Clear Policies, Clear Expectations

Ask to see the policies on:

  • Settling in

  • Managing illness and medication

  • Behaviour support

  • Transitions to school or the next room

These documents will help you understand the setting’s values and how they handle everyday challenges.

Trust Your Gut

Sometimes, it’s not about the checklist. It’s about how you feel. Ask yourself:

  • Do I feel comfortable leaving my child here?

  • Does my child seem relaxed and curious?

  • Do I feel welcomed and respected as a parent?

If something feels off, it’s okay to walk away. If it feels right, you’ll know.

Final Thoughts

Finding the right childcare takes time, but it’s worth every visit, question, and conversation. Remember: you’re not just looking for a place—you’re choosing partners to support your child’s first steps into the world. Choose a setting that aligns with your values and gives your child the space to flourish.
